Picture yourself in a space where every corner is filled with traditional Latina-American aroma. Welcome to the Latino Club, where we celebrate not just our culture, but our union through music, dance, games, and shared traditions. Regardless if you are trying to meet new friends, learn more about Latino culture, or simply just enjoy yourself, the Latino Club is your getaway to a memorable journey. The Latino Club of Walla Walla High School looks forward to serving a community where people can come together to value and learn more about Latino culture. The club focuses on creating a space for cultural exchange whether it’s through social gatherings, workshops, activities, or events.
On Friday, December 13th, I met with the Latino Club president, Azusena Fuentes Rios and secretary, Camilia Vargas-Pilares to interview them on how they plan to attract a bigger audience, what they do within the club, what activities they do, and how they welcome non-Latinos.
As I stepped into the class, I could feel the warm welcome, nobody looking at me weirdly, their laughter mingled with the tenderness of soft chatting. As I sat down, I could feel the warmth of the chair. I then introduced myself and thanked them for having me; I opened my Chromebook and waited to see how everything in the class ran. Finally, after I soaked up the inviting atmosphere, I pulled out the questions I was ready to ask. While keeping it professional, squinting at the font of the questions, I mentally prepared myself to make sure I was ready. Nonetheless, I humbly proceeded with my first question, trying not to strain my eyes.
“What inspired the founding of this club and what has your journey been like within the organization?”
The secretary answered, describing that the purpose was to create a community for Latino and American students. The president reasoned that the journey of the club has been well because they’re able to create a comfortable environment and bring cultures together, which has left a lasting impact.
Next, I asked: “What advice would you give to new members to help them get the most out of their club experience?”
The secretary responded, highlighting that it’s advised to new members to put themselves out there more and participate in the activities; while doing this, they will be able to create connections with other people.
Following her reply, I prompted: “In what ways does the club collaborate with other events or organizations?”
The secretary said that they do lots of events outside of school and celebrate special days within the culture along with participating in parades. For example, the club partakes in skiing, carnivals, trips, and other activities in the club.
I then asked my final question: “Is there anything else you would like people to know about the club?”
The secretary replied, saying that everyone is welcome – not just Latinos. There has been a miscommunication that only Latinos are allowed, so they want to emphasize that all are welcome.
As I wrapped everything up, I thanked them for their time; after the interview was over, I sat with the members for the rest of the meeting and enjoyed the food and fun activities they offered. As I reflect on this article, I can’t help but be grateful for the information I discovered about the Latino Club. Not only did I learn that there are a myriad of club activities held outside of school – such as parade participations – but I realized that the Latino Club is a club designed for everyone interested in the Latino culture, regardless of race. If you are a student here at WA-HI, I would recommend joining this club. https://www.wahibluedevils.org/
